‘Cannot GET /’ Message in Node.js

After creating my first Node.js server and attempting to access index.html through a browser – http://localhost:5000/ – ‘Cannot GET /’ was all I could see.

‘Cannot GET /’ is the default message displayed when
1. Your Node.js server has not been configured to display html.
2. There is no index.html page at the root to serve.

Here is the simplest server.js content that i’ve found to create a generic web server:
var connect = require('connect');
connect.createServer( connect.static(__dirname) ).listen(5000);
